TOP TRENDS OF 2020

By: Vulgar Vanity

The year 2020 was by far the most tumultuous year most of us have experienced. It will absolutely go down in history, so make sure to get your story straight to help the kids out in their Social Studies/ US History courses. (Personally I’m saying I single handedly coordinated and organized the BLM march in my city, so keep that truth to yourself. I want my kids to think of me as a legend.)

It was a very polarizing, scary, anxious, and heavy year to say the least.

We were hit with all kinds of natural disasters worldwide, protests and riots, a very significant election, a new widespread pandemic with a terribly high mortality rate, highest unemployment rates in years, a stay at home order of quarantine, and the deepest global recession since World War II.

Needless to say were all looking forward to the demise of 2020.

While the world was burning (literally) and communities fell apart for one reason or another; like most things in life, people found a way to distract themselves from reality and that’s how we got  “The Top Trends of 2020” .

Quarantine and the new reality we all had to adjust to truly created a whole new way of life.

Thankfully, with the internet, we were all able to stay connected through the isolation and share our frustrations as well as the things that inspired and motivated us.

TIKTOK is the app formally known as Musically and was originally launched as a lip synching/dance app for younger kids.

TIKTOK had massive growth in the year 2020 with BILLIONS of new accounts where you could follow the daily quirks from the average person across the country to your favorite celebrities trying to dance.

This app blew up due to its ability to spread information quickly and to a select audience. Like any algorithm the app is designed to share your 60 second posts with those who have similar interests, but unlike other apps, TikTok allows you to “stich” or “duet” other people’s content as a form of sharing you reaction/ response which allowed your content to get views very rapidly & allowing for a very quick overturn of people and content going “viral”.

Naturally, this new app became the newest source of news, fashion trends, motivation, political debates, and even a bit of controversy alongside all of the wholesome dancing and those sharing their talents with the world.

The app became so successful that it launched a “creator fund” for its users to earn income based on the size of their account and the engagement on their content.

There are now a new set of “celebrities” that arose from their fame on TikTok.

As previously mentioned TikTok is by far the number one trend setting app of the year, and at the beginning of quarantine one of the very first trends to come from the app was

~ whipped coffee ~

All “non-essential” businesses had to come to a close which left people missing out on their daily morning Starbucks.

Baristas nationwide rushed to all social media platforms (primarily TikTok) to share the secrets behind the bar, and allow people to achieve their “luxurious” coffees from home. Once the recipes came out, consumers rushed to their kitchens to make their very own whipped ice coffee.

Millions of videos were released of people sharing their recipes, and sharing videos of them drinking their whipped ice coffees from glass mason jars and environmentally friendly metal straws.

Goes to show that in the midst of stressful times, a good coffee can brighten the mood.

BANANA BREAD

In the first few week of quarantine we all needed some fun distractions, and we quickly learned we needed to learn how to utilize all of the spare time we were now allowed!

Chrissy Teigen blew up Twitter when she shared her recipe for the infamous banana bread from her cook book. The recipe quickly made its way through all social media platforms as everyone became a curios baker overnight! If you logged into any social media platform in April you probably saw a friend/mutual posting the banana bread they created in the kitchen they’ve never used before quarantine. Everyone was very proud of their new learned skills and were eager to share their productivity.

After people realized that drinking copious amounts of heavily sugared coffee and eating banana bread every night wasn’t a sustainable diet, people turned to fitness to show off their overwhelming productivity.

Due to the closure of all non-essential businesses people did not have access to the gymnasiums they pay monthly subscriptions for and they were forced to get creative.

Numerous fitness accounts began launching free content during the first month of quarantine to allow beginners as well as experienced athletes to keep up with their daily at home workouts in place of the gym.

You saw parks being completely cluttered by people who felt they were more active out of the home; as well as your favorite Instagram models going live each morning to share their workouts regimen with the world.

Yes inner beauty is important, but we all have a certain level of vanity we like to uphold. We all enjoy looking nice and presentable, it give us confidence, and motivates us to be social.

When the barber shops/ hair salons were closed due to the stay at home order… things got interesting.

Without the ability to get go professional haircuts, people grabbed a camera to film their at home haircuts in the comfort of their bathrooms. People trusted their loved ones with the fate of their hair… and ended up shaving their heads.

Cutting their own hair, dying their own hair, taking out their own hair extensions, and laying down their own wigs.

People were determined to keep up their looks despite being locked up at home.

It made for great content and truly terrible haircuts, but there were plenty of new skills attempted and learned throughout the journey.

In the future, knowing the skillset, make sure to be polite and generous to your barbers/hair stylists.

The stay at home order provided a lot of additional time we didn’t have before, as well as forcing us to face all the home renovations we’ve neglected throughout the years.

Whether it was out of necessity or general interest; home renovations were a hot trend.

Personally; my mother started a garden and renovated her entire backyard.

My father even went as far as to finally paint the bedroom I grew up in, I asked him to paint it when I was 13, I’m 26 now and haven’t lived with my parents since 2011.

It’s the thought that counts.

I painted my living room and refurnished my entire living room & bedroom.

There were multiple videos of people sharing their new hoe renovations as well as step by step guides to successful renovations.

When all is set and done, make sure to compliment your loved ones on the new features of their home.

Learning to Cook

Postmates, UberEats, Favor, DoorDash, and GrubHub all became increasingly lucrative as people realized that they couldn’t dine out and they didn’t have effective cooking skills.

Ordering takeout and delivery became an expense many people were no longer able to afford, and they were forced to sharpen those skills in the kitchen.

TikTok and other platforms came in handy for those who needed assistance in the kitchen. Chefs and the average foodie shared their recipes, step by step guides, and tips.

We thank you for your service.

Soon after you began to see your loved ones posting their meals and being excited to test out their new skills during the holidays.

Ahh yes.

The Grinch who stole Christmas…

and birthdays, and summers, and literally 90% of  2020 worldwide.

CORONAVIRUS

The global pandemic is definitely not a trend, but was a massive part of the year as a whole. It was and is a tragedy that we hope comes to a demise alongside this rancid year that is 2020. A global pandemic with the highest mortality rate we’ve experienced since the Spanish plague with numbers so scary we were forced to drop our daily routines and quarantine away from our loved ones. There was an outpour of videos from medical professionals urging us all to follow the regulations and guidelines provided to us, asking that we wear our face covers when we leave the home, but to remain quarantined unless absolutely necessary.

The Texas Inked family wishes you and your loved ones a healthy 2021 and hope that we can all move forward from this tragedy united and eager to continue to share our passions with the world.

U.S. ELECTION

*Sigh* of course in the midst of one of the most stressful years in world history, we here in the states had the added stress of our Presidential Election.

This was a very tense, polarizing, dividing, and hateful election. Despite who you voted for or what you wish the outcome of the election was. We truly hope that we as Texans can come together again and show the rest of the country why we’re known as the great lone star state.

The election is over.

The people have spoken.

The decision has been made.

We hope to put our political differences aside, and work on building a successful future for ourselves and our future families.
